Tropaeolum majus
Tropaeolaceae
Temperature
- Germination: 22°C
- Growth: 24°C
Light
- Nasturtium does best with plenty of light.
- Start your plant at 12 hours of light per day.
- Increase to 16 hours a day over the first month.
- Decrease to 10 hours per day over the second month.
Soil
- Nasturtium prefers poor quality soils. Do not fertilize.
- For nasturtium, we recommend this soil mix.
Time Of Growth
- Expect about 55 to 65 days from seed to harvest, depending on variety.
HOW TO START
- Plant seeds about 1 cm deep directly into growing container. Keep soil moist and in plenty of light for germination.
WATERING & CARE
- Water regularly but take care not to over water. In order to promote flowering, stress the plant by reducing water intake after about 4 or 5 weeks. For three days, do not water your plant (or water very little if you have a rapidly draining soil). After three days gradually increase water. You should see blooms within a week or ten days.
- Remove dead blooms for prolonged flowering.
How To Use
- The nasturtium flower can be used as a garnish for salads, added into butter, or stuffed individually with soft cheeses or spreads.
- The foliage, with its hint of pepper flavor, can also be used in salads.
